What We Do
The Cowgirl Way. We use the power of dairy cow compost in all our products. Not all composts are the same. Dairy cow-girls produce a manure full of nutrients and minerals. We’re local farm kids, born and raised in Southern Idaho. We’re part of the agricultural community, and as a result, we know the source of our products! As a result, we produce only all-natural, local products that are environmentally friendly. In other words, true and complete soil amendments.
How it’s made
At Cowgirl, it all starts with the most important employees: the dairy cow girls. The process begins with the girls chowing down on their super healthy food. Our compost is loaded with vitamins and minerals from their specialized diet. We really do get out what we put in.
Our compost comes straight from family dairy farms in Idaho. The manure is then piled into rows and the rows are and slowly turned over many months. The temperature inside the piles reaches several hundred degrees, resulting in a dark, rich, and productive soil amendment we love.
What is composting?
Composting is nature's way of recycling organic material into a rich soil amendment that gardeners fondly nickname Black Gold.
The composting process involves four main components: organic matter, moisture, oxygen and bacteria. The organic matter used in Cowgirl's compost is dairy cow manure - which supplies the carbon - and grain straw from the cows’ bedding - which supplies the nitrogen. Moisture contents are carefully monitored, and the composting piles are slowly turned to supply oxygen. The heavy hitters in this process are bacteria and other microorganisms. These little guys, which are already present, will break down the materials into compost. As the bacteria decompose the organic matter, they release heat. Composting piles can reach upwards of 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat destroys all weed seeds, disease pathogens, and herbicides.
The final product is a nutrient rich soil amendment, loaded with nitrogen, organic matter, and minerals. Everything a healthy soil needs to thrive!
It starts with dairy cow-girls
Dairy cow-girls start their day with a great breakfast. Dairy cow-girls eat around 100 pounds of feed every day. Their diet is a healthy mix soy beans, beet pulp, corn, hay, grains, cottonseed, vitamins, minerals, and of course a sprinkle of molasses to sweeten the deal. The result is a manure that is full of everything a healthy soil needs to thrive.
